Renewables Quality Advice

Spam Mail, Phone Calls and Doorstep Salesman

Unfortunately, before I can discuss renewables, I must first address spam calls and cold calls. We all receive these phone calls, emails, and knocks on the door offering so-called government discounts or free insulation, only to be led to something else that will cost a significant amount of money. We must all be very cautious of this type of contact.

I suggest that you refrain from communicating with these people. If you think it's a genuine offer, consider having a friend or relative review it with you. Ofcom offers advice; look here. Citizen Advice also provides information on how to stop nuisance calls; see here.

Some limited grants are available for renewable energy projects, and these are mentioned here. It's better to be proactive, know what you want, and contact these companies yourself rather than react to a phone call or email.

Poor workmanship

Be cautious when a workman knocks on the door, offering free loft insulation or a heating upgrade. These individuals prey on the vulnerable and can often deceive the wise with their sales tactics. Have a system where the tradesperson knocks on the door, i.e, refer the tradesperson to a third party for the decision (son, daughter, friend), have a cooling-off period before work starts. Please do not give in to doorstep pressure; always check them out online and get references. Nationwide offers good advice; look here. Another source of information, and if you are a victim of fraud, then contact ActionFroud. Unfortunately, there are occasions when even a well-installed system malfunctions.  Unfortunately, even large and so-called respectable companies have bad days. If you're unhappy, ask for the company's complaints procedure and follow all the steps until you're happy.

What is the MCS certificate

Although not mandatory, I recommend that if you're considering Solar Panels or Heat Pumps, you go with a company that is MCS certified. Also, get quotes from at least three companies.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is a government-backed UK initiative established in 2007 to ensure that small-scale renewable energy installations, such as solar panels and heat pumps, meet universal quality standards.

MCS certifications are available for solar panels, heat pumps, and installers, which, when combined, should ensure that your installation proceeds smoothly. For more information on the scheme, look here

You should also look for products and specialists with a Flexi-Orb certification, ensuring the same high standards. For more info, look here.
