This Month's Energy Saving Tips. July 2025

Set your boiler’s flow temperature between 55 and 60 degrees (if you have a hot water cylinder, we recommend setting the flow temperature on your boiler to a few degrees over 60 °C to kill the bugs).

Fit insulation rolls on the wall behind radiators. This will reflect heat outwards into the room, making the radiators more efficient.

Control your Room thermostat, often found in the hall, but can be found anywhere. Tweaking your room thermostat to somewhere between 18-21°c is ideal. Vulnerable people may want it higher to feel comfortable.

Do not keep the remote Room thermostat in a drawer or the hottest or coolest room in the house. This will influence rooms in other parts of the house.

Use the Programmer correctly. Many people keep the programmer on or off. Some boiler installers don't help here by fitting a programmer that requires a degree in electronics to operate. There are simple programmers; alternatively, technology has helped, where programmers can be adjusted on smartphones, so you can turn the heating off when you are about to leave home and back on when you are on your way home.

TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) in empty rooms turn lower. Avoid turning them off as this may cause the room to get very cold and possibly damp. Just turn the TRV down and keep the door ajar for air circulation.

Put an insulation jacket on your hot water tank (for foam or jacket insulated cylinders, it's always worth putting as much hot insulation as you can fit around the cylinder.

Keep the hot water cylinder at 60 degrees. That will kill the bugs, as there is no need for it to be higher.
